About GST

GST is implemented to support the Make in India Initiative. Gst is a consumption-based tax that is levied based on the “Destination principle’ ’The essence of GST is in removing the cascading effects. GST (Goods and services) are divided into five different tax slabs for collection of a tax: 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. However, products and services such as petroleum products, alcoholic drinks, and electricity services have not come under GST tax and instead are taxed separately by the state governments, as per the previous tax system. And there is a special rate of 0.25% on rough, precious, and semi-precious stones and 3% on gold.

In addition to a cess of 22% or other rates on top of 28% GST(good and services tax) applies to very few items like aerated drinks, all luxury cars, and all tobacco products. Pre-GST (good and services tax), the statutory tax rate for most of the goods was about 26.5%, and Post-GST, most goods are expected to be in between the 18% tax range.

Due to multiple indirect taxes being imposed by the Centre and State, with uncompleted or no input tax credits accessible at developed stages of value addition, the cost of most goods and services in the country today are laden with many hidden taxes.
